Is there any foolproof way to get through the alien invasion on Romani Ranch? I always end up missing one and lose the cows .

I myself always had problems with this event. My method to winning is this:

Forget Epona.

Basically, don the bunny hood, and run around on foot shooting the aliens. It may seem like a bad idea since you're not moving when you're shooting, but it works better than using Epona, imo.
