Status Update: Forum Move Nearly Complete

Published: January 26, 2013 By webmasterbob | Comments (9)

UPDATE Jan 30: Because of an issue with cross site integration, we were unable to start the final move on-time. We expect to start the final move Jan 31 or Feb 1. Thank you all!

UPDATE Jan 27: We are still working on some aspects of the forum and fixing a few things in the new site design before we move forward. It is anticipated that these changes will be complete, by the latest, Monday, and we can move forward with the rest of the move. Thanks for your patience!

Good news! All the forum content, and all your accounts for that matter, are safe and sound running on the new board software.

For the time being, we need to keep the new forum under wraps because our current site backend systems are not designed to integrate with it. At the present, we are still running the site integrated with the old forum. Once the second part of the move is complete, upgrading the entire website, we'll be able to integrate with the new board software. Just a brief reminder that you should not make any changes to your account until we launch the upgraded site. Any changes you make at this point will be lost when we get rid of the old forums.

As far as a timeline, I'm still working out a few things here and there in the new forum - mainly trying to ensure that all of you are placed in a position relative to your current rank within the new ranking system. I anticipate being able to start the site-wide upgrade tomorrow evening, which means that ZS will be down for several hours (maybe even a day or so). Thank you all for your patience during this process!

You can, however, still comment on news - so long as you're logged in of course.

So, quick question for clarification, this isn't just an upgrade - this is a whole new system? I mean, I feel like the current forum works fine, but that's just me maybe.

Yes, this is entirely new software. The company we license our software from, vBulletin, has gone down the toilet since it was purchased by a company called Internet Brands. They haven't been able to release a stable version in nearly three years; that's why we never upgraded to vBulletin 4.

Don't worry, the new software is FAR more efficient than vBulletin and a lot more fun to use. You'll love it, trust me.

Sorry if I'm spamming the comments, but we don't have a forum right now ;).

What is it exactly that you are switching to? I'm a member of a few sites, and I honestly like vBulletin the best so...

The software is called Xenforo. It's the same board software used by IGN.

Wow, really? That sounds really cool! I hope that wasn't expensive!!!

Yup! Not to get too techy, but it's made by a few developers that left vBulletin after Internet Brands took over. It's actually less expensive than vBulletin, and honestly I thought it was more important to have good software from the start than rely on, well, whatever is out there. It means I'll spend less time fixing the software and more time making Zelda content!

    So excited!
